The Vine Sisters
The Vine Sisters also known as The Vines Sisters and The Glorifying Vines Sisters, are a family group from Farmville, North Carolina, east of Rocky Mount. The group consists of four sisters, Dorothy, Alice, Mattie and Audrey; Johnny Ray Daniels, lead guitarist and singer is married to Dorothy; Curtis Harper, drummer is married to Mattie; the group also has Frank Smith, guitarist; and Carl Matthews, guitarist. The sisters performed for many years at their local church, Union Grove Baptist Church near Farmville; where they were originally referred to as the Heavenly Ten when they originally had their other two sisters Rosa Bell and Margaret performing with them and with their musicians; they were then referred to as the Glorifying Vines Sisters, which is the name they first recorded under on the Pinewood label out of Chesapeake, Virginia. Eventually Rosa Bell and Margaret left the group to focus on their families. The remaining four sisters then recorded their lp's as The Vine Sisters and Family, while they continue to sing locally in the Carolinas they now also promote other gospel groups.
These sisters have recorded five albums, three cd's and to my knowledge only five singles. Wendell Parker of ShurFine records released the group's music on the Church Door and ShurFine labels this started in 1984, when they recorded the album "There's a Blessing Over the Hill" on Church Door records, the album was reissued on ShurFine Records, which included the often requested song "We Will Work Till Jesus Comes". In 1986, they released the album "Robed and Ready", which included the songs "Robed and Ready" and "How Long". When they were interviewed several years ago, Alice stated that Johnny Ray Daniels is the person who is the guiding force for the group; Johnny Ray has been singing and playing the guitar and piano for over 25 years; originally a member of a gospel singing family, he sang with the Spiritualaires. Dorothy says that they intend to keep on singing. "Singing is our way of giving it all to God. It's my way of witnessing to the fact that God can do everything that he said." "It makes you feel good when you get people clapping and praising the Lord and acting like they like what we're doing" says Mattie. " You feel good knowing that you have helped win people over to the Lord." The sisters are influenced by and close in style to the traditional gospel groups, such as the Swanee Quintet, the Five Blind Boys Of Alabama, The Mighty Clouds of Joy and the Sensational Nightingales.
The Vine Sisters recorded 45's for Pinewood Records of Chesapeake, Virginia, where they were listed as The Glorifying Vines Sisters; they then moved onto albums, recording albums for Church Door Records and ShurFine Records and finally moving onto cd's from 1994 and into the 2000's.
