The SENSATIONAL GOSPELAIRES OF DEATSVILLE, ALABAMA
The Sensational Gospelaires of Deatsville, Alabama are a quartet that originated in 1960 with David Dickerson under the name The Gospelaires of Deatsville, Alabama; the group has been recording since the early 1970's, recording their first Lp in 1977 on HSE records. The group have recorded extensively on Southern based regional labels including HSE, J&B, Lefevre Sound, Melendo, Music City Sound and ShurFine Records. The groups' name has changed over time to include: Gospelaires Of Deatsville, The Sensational Gospelaires (The Country Boys of Deatsville, Alabama); Rev. Walter Ellis & The Gospelaires, Rev. Walter Ellis and The Country Boys of Alabama. Now known as Rev Walter Ellis & The Country Boys, the group is made up of family members, including Rev. Walter Ellis; Clarence Ellis; Daryl Ellis; Dwayne Ellis and Greg Ellis.
The Country Boys trace their religious inspiration and style of gospel music to that of the Williams Brothers; comparisons have been made with the Williams Brothers, yet the Country Boys' sound is both smooth and explosive, reflecting the fiery spirit one experiences during a good Sunday morning worship service. The group started their own record label (CB Ministry) and recorded their 2006 album "Live at the Rest" on it. Ironically, Deatsville is a small town of less than 500 people in Central Alabama and is less than 2% black. The group has now formally moved to nearby Wetumpka, Alabama (hence losing the mention of Deatsville in the groups' name); Wetumpka actually has more than 6,000 people and is approximately 1/3 black. Rev. Walter Ellis is actually the pastor at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, he lives in Wetumpka, he has also recorded a solo album.
To my knowledge the group has issued nine albums and five 45's.
