MILDRED CLARK AND THE MELODY-AIRES
Mildred Clark And The Melody Aires, are a gospel group from Kanas City, Kansas. Mildred Clark was born Mildred Seaberry, one of 9 children to Mr George and Mrs Cora Seaberry, on September 10, 1933/1934, in Little Rock, Arkansas, and passed away from cancer on April 21, 2007, in Kansas City, Kansas. Several of Mildred's siblings and her parents were born in Dumas, Arkansas, or other parts of Desha County, opposite Mississippi; Mildred's family moved to Kansas when she was young, Mildred grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. Mildred is buried at Highland Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas.
Originally known as The Kansas City Melodyaires, Mildred organized the group in 1958, with group members Beulah Gunnels and Beulah's sister Genetter Conway (now Genetter Bradley), Howard Franklin and his sister Lillie Franklin- Mildred and Genetter were both lead singers, as was Lillie.
Mildred was married to Series Clark and had three daughters, Barbara, Saundra and Maryetta (known as Doll), all three daughters would sing with Mildred on her ABC/Peacock albums and her Savoy albums, unfortunately i know little about Mildred's life outside of gospel apart from this information. Barbara would later be known as Barbara White, Barbara recorded a solo lp on AIR records; Saundra performed as Saundra Clark and later as Saundra Dowd on Mildred's later albums, Saundra became known later as Elder Saundra Clark Dowd and was based in Ohio. Maryetta born on July 31, 1953 in Kansas, was known as both Maryetta Scott and Maryetta Herfield (her second married name), she also performed as Doll Scott on Mildred's later albums, unfortunately Doll passed away in Columbus, Ohio on December 24, 1999.
Mildred had been an active member of The Madden Temple COGIC in Kansas City, Kansas, she remained living in Kansas City throughout her life and was a member of the Miracle Temple COGIC in Kansas City, Kansas up to her death. Mildred began recording since 1964 and continued recording albums until at least 1990, recording at least 14 albums and numerous 45's; prior to joining the Kansas City Melodyaires, Mildred performed with The Madden Temple COGIC Choir in Kansas City, Kansas. Mildred also wrote many of the gospel songs that she and her group sang, showing her great talent as a singer, gospel songwriter and composer.
With her releases on ABC/Dunhill/Peacock onwards, Mildred recorded with her daughters Barbara (Barbara White), Saundra Clark (she would become Saundra Dowd on Mildred's later albums including Mildred's last lp on Wajji where they performed lead on 3 songs together) and Doll (Maryetta) Scott. Other group members included Demetri (Mick) Hopson, Darschell House, Barbara Cooke, Sheryl Little, Curtis Foster, Jackie Sowell and Lorie Anderson. Mildred recorded on Acquarian, Simco Records, Songbird, ABC/Peacock, Savoy, Heat and Wajji. Mildred was popular throughout the midwest and the South throughout her carer, my favorite lp by Mildred is "I Can't Give Up Now" on Savoy records, all of her Savoy releases are great albums. I love Mildred's voice, she sang many great soul stirring songs including "I Can't Give Up Now", "My God Can Do It All", "I'm Gonna Tell Everybody" and more. I believe that Mildred was not as valued or recognized as much as she should have been, she was one talented, God fearing sister, who could move folks in the aisle with her songs and wonderful voice.
