J & W Records
J & W Records appears to have been owned by gospel singer Rev Willie Morganfield of Jewel Records fame. A gospel singer born in Stovall, Mississippi on July 11, 1927 and dying suddenly of a heart attack on October 18, 2003 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Willie was a cousin of blues legend Muddy Waters. Willie sang with the New Orleans Chosen Five and was a vocalist with The Kings Of Harmony and also with The Delta Friendly Four, before going solo. J & W operated from the 1960's; it was originally based in Pontiac, Michigan; operating from 436 Whittemore St, Pontiac Michigan. The label then moved to Cleveland, Ohio at 1347 E.112TH St, Cleveland, where it shared the same address as the S & H Record Co; I believe that Willie also owned S & H Record Co.
Willie had moved from Memphis to Cleveland in 1962, The 7000 series was based in Ohio. The label appears to have closed upon Willie’s move to Fairmont, West Virginia, where Willie went as a pastor; Willie then moved from West Virginia moving permanently back to Mississippi. The Michigan releases issued both 45's and LP's; while the Ohio releases only issued 45's. The 100 series started in Pontiac and was still issued there by label number 150; however, by 152 the 100 series was issued in Cleveland. Besides being a singer himself, Willie also wrote songs for himself and some of the artists on J & W. Willie was also pastor at the Christian Baptist Church in Cleveland; later pastoring at Morning Star Baptist Church in Fairmont, West Virginia, before permanently moving to Clarksdale, Mississippi, as the pastor of Bell Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The discography is incomplete but i wanted to list it due to the quality of the releases on the label and also because it was a black owned gospel label.
The 45's in the 7000 series have a simple typed J&W Record Company logo listed on the label.
Release 156 was issued twice, with one release having the song titles mostly in lower case, while the second pressing was issued with the song titles in Capital letters. I always provide the spelling directly from the 45's and lp's and in the same lower and upper case as on the labels and covers.
I must give a big thank you to Patrick Staten for his 6 additions to my J & W discography, I have placed an asterix * next to Patrick's additions.
A big thank you to Bob Laughton for his 7 additions to this discography (6 45's and 1 lp). I have placed an + next to Bob's additions.
