C .J. Quincy & The Allstars Of Jackson, Mississippi
Unfortunately very little is known about C.J. Quincy. I do know that he was born on November 30, 1935 in Mississippi and was a resident of Jackson, Mississippi throughout his adult life; also that he had his group "C.J. Quincy and The Allstar Gospel Singers Of Jackson, Mississippi, also known as C.J. Quincy and The All Stars of Jackson, MS" for at least 20 years through the 1970's up until at least 1994. C.J. and his group recorded 7 albums, 4 on J&B Records out of Jackson, Mississippi, 2 albums on HSE Records out of Nashville, Tennessee and 1 album on Ace Records, out of Pearl, Mississippi (Ace records also recorded soul/blues music). C.J. Quincy also recorded at least one solo 45, titled "That’s What’s Wrong With the Church Today/Going Home To Live With Jesus" this 45 is released on C.J.'s own label Quincy Records. C.J. issued this 45 twice, originally on a red label as a solo release and then reissued on a yellow label. The Red label release was the original pressing going for 3 minutes for each song; while the yellow label release was a later reissue with C.J. singing with his group, this release was produced by J&B Records, this release went for 3:36 minutes on "That’s What’s Wrong With the Church Today" and 3:25 minutes on "Going Home To Live With Jesus" .
C.J. wrote gospel songs for himself and other performers, including The Williams Brothers (known as The Original Williams Brothers of Jackson, Mississippi- NOT the Williams Brothers that recorded on Savoy, Malaco, Blackberry and Song Bird records that were from Smithdale, Mississippi). C.J. wrote 5 of the 9 songs on their LP J&B 0047; he also had the group record his song "That’s What’s Wrong With the Church Today" before he had it recorded on his own album. C.J. produced his own gospel albums, or co-produced them, depending on the release, he also produced other gospel groups and their music, including The Greenvillette’s lp “Show Me The Way” on the Top Knotch label (the album is also listed as “I’m Depending On You” on the actual lp label).
Almost nothing is known about or listed as to who The Allstars of Jackson, Mississippi were, as on most albums there has been nothing mentioned of who the group members were, apart from C.J. himself. However, on the HSE release 1536, Heaven Is A Place I Want To Go, the back cover does list the lead vocalists as CJ Quincy and The Rev Warren White. Unfortunately I don't know which songs Rev White sang on as the lead vocalist as that information is not listed on the back cover, I do know that Rev Warren White was a one time vocalist with the Jackson Trumpeteers, when they recorded on Designer records, however, I do not know at which time he joined CJ Quincy and The Allstars of Jackson, MS. On HSE 1579, the album does list Tommy Carter, Barry Kendrick, Richard Kendrick Rogers, Warren White and Paul Ashmond as contributing to that project, yet the album does not state who recorded which song, or whether they were all backing singers on all of the songs on the album. I am not aware of which of these group members were lead vocalists or shared duets with C.J. on songs on the other albums, as this information is not actually recorded on those albums either.
Even though so little is known about C.J. and his group, I wanted to list them on my site as CJ and his group are good solid down home gospel singers, I wanted them to be acknowledged somewhere, especially on a black gospel site.
