HI-WAY RECORDS
Hi-Way Records is an East Orange, New Jersey record label which issued a limited number of 45's and an even smaller number of lp's. The label was apparently owned by Howard L Russell, the same man that owned Hy Grade Music; it was originally located at 181 Central Ave, East Orange, then moved to 202 Amherst St, East Orange by at least record number 214, Hi-Way, phone 201 674 7030 by 230. Release 208 only stated it was from East Orange, NJ, with no address, while releases 209, 211 and 212 have no address, city or state listed on the label; however, release 210 has the Central Ave address on it. The label had a limited output of generally good/high quality 45's, from the 1960's through to the 1980's; including 45's by The Davis Sisters (of Savoy and Gotham Records fame), The Gospel Hi-Lites, The Southland Singers and the Original Joy Harmonizers (who also recorded for Orbit Records). Hi-Way 230 is allocated to both Quintones and Motivations, refer to the photos /scans attached. The label issued almost exclusively gospel releases; however, number 208 is a secular 45.
A big thank you to Sister Geraldine Manson formerly of The New Jersey All-Star Choir, for informing me of release 203 and the information on the song "Gabriel", your assistance and help are very much appreciated.
Release 201 by The Davis Sisters has been issued three times, with the same group and same songs, but with three different designs of the Hi Way logo on the label.
Lp 2001 was issued twice, with the first pressing having a black and white photo of the group on the cover, while the second pressing had a color cover with religious stained glass panels on it- the songs are identical on both lp's.
A point of interest; The Thrashing Wonders (207), also issued "Long Line of Poor Folk" on the JAS label; I do not know which release came first; both releases had a different flip side.
If any visitor to this site know of the other 45 and lp releases i would be grateful for the details.
